Spring is in the air, winter has finally let go of the reigns! Birds are chirping, bugs are crawling, and the sun once again has returned from its six month hibernation here is Michigan. Along with the sun, comes the need to make the necessary plans for updates to and cleaning in our homes. With so much to do, it is easy to become overwhelmed by it all. Here are a few tips to help you plan the next weeks, as you clean up what mother nature left behind.
1) Make a schedule:
The first step to successful spring cleaning is to make a plan. Identify the areas of your home that need the most attention and make a list of the tasks you need to accomplish in each area. This will help you stay organized and focused throughout the process. It will also give you that dopamine high as you check off each task as you complete it.
2) Declutter:
One of the most important aspects of spring cleaning is decluttering. Go through each room of your home and get rid of anything that you no longer need or use. One way of thinking about whether you should keep it or throw it away is asking the question, "When is the last time I used this" or "Do I know when the next time I will need this is?" If the answer is, "I don't know", that is a good sign that it is something you can get rid of. This can be a difficult process, but it will help to free up space in your home and make it easier to keep clean in the future.
3) Think up, down, in, out:
When it comes to cleaning, it's always best to start at the top and work your way down. This means starting with the ceilings, light fixtures, and high shelves before moving on to the lower areas of the room. This will prevent dust and debris from falling on surfaces you've already cleaned.
Everything should have a place to belong. Once an item makes it inside the garage, it either stays there or is thrown away/sold from that point forward. It doesn't go back in the house for ANY REASON. If you are having a garage sale, sort through any unpurchased merchandise in the garage. This will prevent the junk you don't need from sneaking its way back into your house.
4) Use the Right Tools:
Having the right tools is key to successful spring cleaning. Make sure you have all the necessary cleaning supplies, such as a vacuum cleaner, broom, mop, and cleaning solution. You may also want to invest in a duster with an extendable handle to reach high areas.
5) Clean Room by Room:
It's easy to become overwhelmed when spring cleaning, so take it one room at a time. Start with the most heavily used areas of your home, such as the kitchen and bathrooms, and work your way to the less frequently used areas, such as spare bedrooms and closets.
6) Get family involved:
Spring cleaning can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be done alone. Get your family involved by assigning tasks to each person. This not only lightens the workload but also teaches kids the importance of keeping a clean and tidy home. If you don't have help and have the means to, hire out the jobs that can be done by others (i.e. - landscaping, powerwashing, etc), so you can focus on the things that you have to do.
7) Don't forget the small stuff:
When cleaning, it's easy to overlook the small things. Make sure to clean behind and under appliances, dust baseboards, and wipe down light switches and doorknobs. These small tasks can make a big difference in the overall cleanliness of your home. In conclusion, spring cleaning can be a time-consuming task, but it's worth the effort to have a clean and organized home. With these tips, you can make the process easier and more manageable, so you can enjoy the beautiful weather and a fresh start to the season.
